City’s Neon Glow Streets Nightlife Captured
By day, Liam Wong is an art director for a video game company. By night, he photographs the color and chaos of the largest city in the world. Wong spends most of his nights exploring Tokyo, and sometimes London. The images Wong captures seem to be more like stills taken right from the video games he oversees.
“I create, capture and design meaningful aesthetics. I love capturing real moments and transforming them into the surreal. In 2015, I purchased my first DSLR, ahead of my trip to Tokyo. When I arrived in Japan, I captured various parts of Tokyo, rarely venturing far from tourist spots. Then one night it rained. And the city came to life and I got lost in the beauty of Tokyo at night.” – Liam Wong
The neon lights transformed into digital images bring the two worlds together. Striking LED lights, shining advertisements and street lanterns mix together into a play of colors and shine. Created cityscapes resemble the phantasmagoria of a virtual world.
“Every day we brush past so many other people in our day-to-day lives, walking past things we deem mundane such as alleyways, signs, and shop fronts, Interesting things are happening all the time, yet I feel we don’t stop to appreciate it as often as we should. That beauty is all around us, even in the darkest corners of a city.” – Liam Wong tells CityLab
“I wish I could say I have extensive techniques or that there is a deeper meaning or that I waited hours for the perfect shot, but I just walked around at night taking pictures of the city. Capturing what was in front of me and sharing it with my followers. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Japan, you absolutely must go, it is beautiful.”
