Get the Wheels Turning

Wheels coat hooks, designed by the Dutch designer Dirk Ploos van Amstel, are very practical. These coat hooks are wheels too. This allows the spaces between the hooks to be enlarged or reduced. It takes just a second to adjust the hooks for the number of coats. The mat epoxy coated aluminium and light ash timber lend Wheels a warm and no-nonsense appearance.

“I wanted to create a coat rack that was flexible enough to accommodate anything that someone would need to hang, whether a hat, a fancy shawl or a rucksack. These usually require larger hooks and – more importantly – more space between them. Get the Wheels Turning lets you shift the hooks to create the exact amount of space you need,” – Ploos van Amstel.

The design gets its clever twist from its oversized and moveable hooks, which work like free-mounted wheels. The well-balanced wheels fit into a frame, allowing the user to change the distance between them, making space to accommodate anything. Both sides of the frames feature a raised edge that can serve as a key tray and support a mirror or photographs. The size of the hooks and availability of the frame in multiple sizes and colours, also makes the system perfect for any room in the house.

“The functional principle underlying this coat rack system is as simple as it is original. This is an ingenious product with a clear design idiom that comes from its function, which is what makes it so elegant.” – Jury statement / German Design Award

Studio Dirk Ploos van Amstel:

This humble coat rack gets its clever twist from its oversized and moveable hooks, which work like free-mounted wheels. The wheels fit into a frame, allowing the user to change the distance between them, making space to accommodate anything. It can just as easily hold up coats, coat hangers, hats, fancy shawls or rucksacks.
