Hotel Santos Porta Fira
Hotel Porta Fira was designed by the architecture firms Toyo Ito & Associates and b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos. The 26-floor hotel tower is 112.71 m (369.78 ft) tall and has a capacity of 345 rooms. The outer facade of the double-skin building is made of red aluminum tubes. Inspired by the lotus flower, the tower twists upwards and expands towards the top.
Porta Fira is part of the building complex “European Plaza” and is connected by an atrium to a rectangular office tower. The building was developed by FCC Construcción, Layetana Developments and Metropolis for Hotels Santos and was constructed by FCC Construcción.
Shaped like a lotus blossom whose contour changes depending on the viewer’s standpoint, the building is a striking sight clothed in a latticework of bright red aluminium pipes. Because of the relationship between ball-and-socket joints, aluminium pipes and structure, the design clings gently and smoothly to the entire façade, expressing rotation, translation and growth as it rises in height.
- The two architecture companies, Toyo Ito & Associates and b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, conceptualised the surreal structure. “The biggest challenge of the skyscraper is its organic design. The façade of red aluminium tubes form continuous lines enclosing the complex geometry of the building, which twists and increases in size as it rises,” states architect Fermín Vázquez. Agbar Tower was awarded second best skyscraper in 2004.
The Torres Porta Fira project is a complex with 80,107.67 square metres of floor area, comprising two 112-metre-tall towers, one for the hotel and the other for use as an office building. The complex is strategically situated between two major developments, the Plaza de Europa city improvement plan area and the Fira 2000 project. The towers have become the gateway to L’Hospitalet from El Prat Airport.
Located right across the Fira 2, Barcelona’s International Fairgrounds, the hotel offers easy access to the city center and El Prat International Airport. Its unique design is a creation of the famous Japanese architect Toyo Hito and will certainly become in a near future, part of the Skyline of Barcelona. An imposing hotel that will offer an exquisite service suitable for all kinds of travelers: corporate individuals, city breaks, congress delegates.
- The functional focus of the second tower is set firmly on use as an office building. The tower is a right-angled affair. At first glance it appears to be a straight prism, sheathed in a subtly recessed glass curtain wall, but the building’s red vertical core is organic in shape and becomes a reflection of the hotel tower. The office building has a floor area of 45,420 square metres.
The hotel has 320 Rooms & Suites: 39 Suites, 91 Superiores, 190 Standard. All of them have air conditioning, pay TV, satellite TV, weather forecast service, Wi-Fi Internet access, mini bar, in-room safe, wake up service, hairdryer, bathroom amenities, direct dial telephone.
Facility & Services:
The Porta Fira hotel offers all the necessary to satisfy all your needs in a exquisite way, with a special design and comfort, that will turn your stay into an experience to remember. Wi-Fi Internet access, meeting rooms, air conditioning, concierge service, wellness area (contrast shower, sauna, massage cabin, gymnasium), laundry service, luggage room, business center, private parking, daily press service, rental car service and adapted common areas.
The project is being done in collaboration with the Japanese architect Toyo Ito. Located between Barcelona airport and the city, the Torres Fira project is the gateway to the new Hospitalet de Llobregat trade fair zone.
One of the great priorities was to respond to its setting and take advantage of the site’s strategic position between to major projects—Plaça Europa and Fira 2000—acting as a gateway and bridge between them. The office building, orthogonal in shape, located perpendicularly to the Plaça Europa axis and laid out at 30º with respect to Gran Via, becomes a termination for the square and dialogues with the other side of Gran Vía, where there are two orthogonal towers perpendicular to this axis. The hotel uses a similar language: the building. Its subtle trefoil ground-plan is gradually rotated with increasing height and opens up like a flower at the top.
The tower turns on its own axis, greeting as it does so the city, the airport, the Plaça Europa and the trade fair site, the viewer’s perception of it constantly changing as it does so. This perception is complemented by a second tower, which at first sight is a simple volume, but which contains a nucleus that also rotates on its axis, reflecting the other tower.
Santos Porta Fira Hotel, world best skyscraper in 2010:
The winner of the renowned Emporis Skyscraper Award 2010 is Hotel Porta Fira in Barcelona. An expert committee annually presents this award to an exceptional building at least 100 meters tall completed within the award year. The critically acclaimed prize for global architecture is now in its 11th year. The winner was chosen from over 300 competing skyscrapers around the world. Porta Fira, with its fascinating visual appearance, beat the world’s highest structure Burj Khalifa in Dubai, into second place. The jury valued the building’s aesthetics and integration into its urban environment over humankind’s fascination with building the tallest structure.
