 Hush Pod Chair

London-based designer Freyja Sewell made from 100% wool felt with cushions stuffed with recycled wool fibres, making it a very green product. It can either be sat inside, creating a womb-like environment, or turned into a chair to be sat upon. “A Seating Pod For Anyone Who Wants To Hide From The World”.

“Hush” (Hush) is the name of this chair very intimate imagined. In this world where social networks are everywhere, for we “connect the world” at any time, and one almost forgot that the moments of intimacy are also part of the basic psychological needs. This observation was already presiding over the accessory Veasyble and combination to sleep anywhere .

The Hush Pod Chair shared philosophy. More than just a chair, Hush Pod Chair is a tool to take time away from the world slip away. Freya Sewell has devised a chair petals can be used in two positions. In high position, the petals form a bulb inside which the person disappears, as in a cocoon opaque leaving a slot as an adjustable opening. In folded position, the petals overlap on the seat to form a cozy armchair well. The designer has cleverly chosen to design the felt his chair, just to add warmth to the intimate side.

Hush is a felt pod that completely encapsulates your body and has a discreet slit down the middle, making it the perfect accomplice to Peeping Toms everywhere. Crawl in to the dark, womb-like interior, fasten the giant button, and ogle away (the slit never closes completely so you can always see out). It’s even got enough room to fit a telescope!

“Never has it been easier for humans to connect, but what about when we want to withdraw? The ‘womb’ shape inspires very different feelings in different people; to me it is a warm, cosy space, for contemplation and rest… By creating an enclosed space HUSH provides a personal retreat, an escape into a dark, quiet, natural space, or state of mind.” – Sewell said!

HUSH – Open plan offices and public buildings, CCTV, online profile sharing, cameras built into our laptops; never has it been easier for humans to connect, but what about when we want to withdraw? The ‘womb’ shape inspires very different feelings in different people; to me it is a warm, cosy space, for contemplation and rest.

There are now 21 cities with populations larger than ten million, and it is predicted that there will be many more in the future. Soaring property prices and lack of available space are causing more and more people to seek alternatives to owning their own home in the city, for example sharing your room with your partner, brother or friend. It is essential to continue to develop new ways of allowing people to comfortably co-exist in these increasingly densely populated environments. By creating an enclosed space HUSH provides a personal retreat, an escape into a dark, quiet, natural space, or state of mind. HUSH can also be transformed to provide more traditional open seating.

  • HUSH is made from 100% wool felt and its cushions are stuffed with recycled wool fibers.
  • HUSH was recently selected for Grand Designs Live as one of Kevin McClouds ‘Green Heros’.
  • Freyja’s work on HUSH is supported by the Campaign for Wool.
