The bookcase was inspired by the Jacob’s Ladder toy – you know, the one from childhood where wood blocks are held together by ribbon? Made from five square wood frames that are joined with nylon strips, the piece can be configured in more ways than you could imagine.
From this concept, the designers Alexander Clark and Nuno Sousa Franco decided to create a shelf that was both playful and functional, to make the design closer to the reality of the middle class. The structure, composed of five modules together by tape cast nylon , allows to adapt the mobile needs of the public, both in the framework for environment and way of arranging the objects within it.
“The major difference from rack is its versatility, allowing it to fit anywhere and anytime,” said Nuno de Sousa Franco. Taking into account the purchasing power of consumers in the new middle class, the theme of last Movelsul, the designers opted for the use of affordable materials such as pine wood strips and nylon , and a simple fabrication process and craft. The same principle dictated the play and finish simple form configurable, which allows suits for any size house.
The shelf Jacob recently received an honorable mention in an international competition. Also there will be a version of rotational molding, which will reduce its price and weight.
The designers , who have joined to form its own brand, the Mameluca, had previously participated in the Salon Design with an inflatable chair and plan to return in 2013 with news editing. Alessandra and Nuno felt participation in the Hall Design a very positive experience because it helps to know several people in the area of design . Moreover, the premium received was a big incentive for the launch of its brand, Mameluca, in the market.

Our challenge was to create a shelf that allows the end user to configure it according to his need or taste, without having to resort to any tool.
Low cost, because it should address a new emerging social class in brazil.
The process started by figuring how we could rapidly connect with a new set of people that had no connection with design, this took us to the world of handcrafted toys. Form here i found jacob toy, and that was the starting point of all creative process.
Regarding materials we looked for low cost materials that everybody knew about, it was easy the answer wood, the pinus its law wood, meaning that it comes from reflorested wood from the south of brazil. Another important thing was the weight, it needed to be light in order for the bookcase to be interactive.
The first value should be easy bridge between design and the new social class and in second place the interactivity of a design object.
APPARENTLY SIMPLE, IT ALLOWS A GREAT INTERACTIVITY. STARTING BY ITS PREVIOUS CONCEPT, WE DECIDED TO CREATE A SHELF WHICH HAD BOTH INGREDIENTS: PLAYFUL AND FUNCTIONAL.
