Lamp Design

Lamp Design by New Zealand-based designer Tim Webber, The works are an exploration of the relationship between some of the two most common materials used in furniture design – wood and metal. The idea was to see how they can contrast yet complement each other in a single piece of furniture or lighting.

Both materials hold quite different emotional responses that have been developed over time through people’s personal experiences with various objects. Wood typically holds a very warm, rich, natural feel, while steel is often described as cold, hard and unforgiving. However, when these two materials are mated together there seems be a harmony that forms in the juxtaposition of these two very different materials.

Metal components of the furniture and lighting have been finished in vibrant powdercoat colours, which I think enhances this contrast between the wood and metal, all while creating approachable objects that have the ability to inject striking colour and warmth into any environment.

The powdercoat finish is also a nice exploration aesthetically due to the almost plastic type look it gives the steel, which somewhat alters the metals’ characteristics. It’s not until the item is personally touched and held that it becomes clear the metal still holds its typical traits.

Ampel Pendant

The ‘Ampel Pendants’ are part of the WM (Wood Metal) series which explores the interesting textural and aesthetical relationship between the warm natural wood and the man-made industrial aluminium material.

Materials:

Pacific Rimu Hand turned wood top, Hand spun aluminium shade, 42w halogen dolly bulb, fabric flex cord.

Colour options:

Wood top – Natural finish (clear coated), Red Stain and clear coated.
Shades – Black powdercoated exterior, white painted interior
White powdercoated inside and out
Fabric Flex – Black, White, Red, Yellow, Blue

Dome Ampel Pendant

The Dome Ampel Pendant is a great light for both commercial and residential applications. It sits perfectly above a dining table and has the versatility to suit many rooms seetings. The pendant provides a great spread of light due to the large opening of the 450mm diameter shade.

Commercially it has endless possibilities for use in all sorts of businesses to provides either directed or ambient light.
Utilising hand-turned Pacific Rimu wood for the top and powdercoated Alluminium for the shade, it gives a beautiful contrast in the warmth of the wood and the colour of the metal. Custom colour options for the shade are available if a minimum order is made.

Powdercoated Spun Alluminium Shade, Pacific Rimu wood top, fabric flex cord, 100w Fluroscent Dolly Bulb included.

Section Lamp

The ‘Section Lamps’ are a simple, stripped back and clean desk or table lamp which has been created to accentuate the beautiful bulb that it holds. It is constructed from a 6mm piece of rectangle section steel and features a turned pacific rimu bulb holder.
The Section Lamp is fitted with an adjustable dimmer so is great for using on a low light so the bulb generates a nice golden glow and really shows of the wonderful filament.

6mm Steel rectangle section, Pacific Rimu wood bulb holder, fabric flex cord, bulb included, in-line dimmer.

Strip Lamp

The Strip Lamp is a simple, elegant, yet fun table lamp which makes a feature of the dolly bulb it supports. The light is controlled by a dimmer so the intensity of the light can be adjusted to suit.

Painted Steel Rod, 60w tungsten dolly bulb.

Frame – Black, White, Blue, Red, Yellow, Orange

Tri Ampel Pendant
