Rocas House by Studio MK27 and 57 Studio is Chile’s Valparaíso Region. Sitting on a stony hillside that gently slopes into the sea, the house is built in tiers to make the most of the coastal views. Sitting on a stony hillside that gently slopes into the sea, the house has been fashioned by lead architect Marcio Kogan into a drawer-like design that renders it into horizontal boxes and trays that “slide” into the hillside, creating multiple levels from which the magnificent view can be taken in.
“Insertion of the project on the site. The implantation was designed as gentle as possible, in order to preserve the level difference of the site and the views. We created two side stone walls, like a programmatic box with the social and service areas of the house. Supported on this box, the upper level contains the private areas of the house, protecting the entrance, taking advantage of the programmatic box underneath to give shape to a terrace.”
“The level difference between the living room and the pool allows one to see the horizon entirely and without interventions, both from within the house and from the outdoor area. The starting point for the project was to preserve the views of the site. The house becomes a “tray” to contemplate the horizon, allowing one to observe the ocean from all the main rooms.” – Studio MK27
The starting point for the creation of the project was in preserving the view. The house is transformed into a tray-like object from where the ocean can be seen without any intervention from all of the main ambients.
The insertion and implantation of the project onto the site was thought out in the most delicate ways possible aiming to preserve the unevenness of this same. There were two side walls created out of stone which absorb, like a drawer, the box program wth all the social and utility services of the house.
Supported and designed in this box is the solidness that comprises the private part of the residence (the first storey) and protects the entrance of the house forming a marques that takes advantage of the programming box that is below just like a terrace. The unevenness that exists between the part of the living room and the pool makes it such that the horizon can be completely admired, without any intervention, both from inside as well as outside the house.
