 SOLO Collection

Solo is a furniture group including a stacking chair, cafe table, and stool. One of the first products by Mattiazzi, a new Italian brand created by Italian woodworkers who have manufactured furniture for other companies for more than 30 years, Solo is the design of Munich-based Studio Nitzan Cohen.

Available in natural and thermo-treated oiled ash, waxed natural oak, and aniline stained ash in various colors, the Solo group offers a cost-efficient alternative for cafes and restaurants. Mattiazzi explains the appeal of Solo: “More of a character, a bit hard but very round, very simple but also intricate, practical and pragmatic but offering a great deal. It’s a café chair, a bar stool that makes no fuss about what it does, a character that says, plainly: ‘Have a seat,’ and one happily complies.” With its perfectly rounded circles and arcs and its light airiness, Solo gives diners a visual feast.

Our HE SAID / SHE SAID series was the first product of the Mattiazzi collection. By now, the works by Sam Hecht, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and Konstantin Grcic have entered and form an exciting discourse and dialogue. Solo continues this discourse but from a slightly different, more reduced point of view.

When SOLO was developed, the aim was to incorporate as much as possible from the Mattiazzi production process, in order to cultivate it into a versatile unique, and cost-efficient chair. We can now happily say that this aim was successfully reached: SOLO is cost-efficient like no other series in the Mattiazzi collection, yet it still upholds the quality level of handwork and the love of details its predecessors so successfully marked.

This robust yet simple and refined furniture family was developed to be used in cafés and restaurants, which is why it offers great flexibility, in terms of both its use and the variations offered. Though simplicity was key with the project, it was very important to find the right nuance and tune the right details as a means of accurately creating the right character for each piece.

In every project special details play a key role, but here they became even more important, as we needed to minimize them in order to maintain cost-efficiency. A special feature of both the chair and stool is a leather inlay, perfectly integrated in the seat surface. Likewise, it offers a wider variety of colour-matching possibilities, as well as the great tactile qualities of natural leather. Playing further with SOLO’s versatility, we worked with local craftsman on finely sewn leather upholstery for the chair’s backrest.

“Solo” was consciously developed in order to exploit all the advantages of crafts production that we got to know and understand in the course of the project. As a result, the series is exceptionally cost-effective and yet maintains the quality craftsmanship and love of detail typical of its predecessors. These robust items of seating are destined for unconditional use in hospitality outlets and public places, and are therefore clear and simple in shape. One of the great benefits of Mattiazzi’s handcrafts production method is its flexibility. There is not one shape and one image, but any number of ways of individualizing the basic form, from the choice of color for the wooden elements and the leather sections through to the use of weatherproof thermowood.Nitzan Cohen
