ULL Knit Mobile Cabinets
Turkish designer Beril Cicek went to Iceland and became fascinated by those big bulky Icelandic sweaters. In response, she created this set of moveable furniture and showed it at the Stockholm Furniture Fair to great acclaim.
ULL is a collection of mobile cabinets, works as ones luggage, made of wool and wood. It is about providing a sense of ease for one to transfer their home into different places. The details on these items are the indications of the specific use of each cabinet, to give the end user an immediate understanding on the function of the pieces.
With simple movements, one gets to dress-undress, disassemble-assemble, the cabinets creating a versatile and personal piece. Inspired from Icelandic traditional pieces, Ullarpeysa the sweater and Saudskinnskor the shoe.
That work on one level as furniture and another as luggage. The pieces start with a light wooden frame which she builds and are then covered by a knitted slip-cover that does look vaguely reminiscent of a sweater. Note the stripey details.
They are all made of wood, a medium she prefers. Cicek is obviously a good knitter and delicate colourist. The details are fun and off-beat such as the large wooden buttons that she has added.
They are storage units, designed to be easily portable. Each has a wooden handle on top for convenience, and effect. The legs twist off and fit into small pockets which have been knit into the outside, as part of the design. So they are easily collapsible, almost like a suitcase.
